  • You did it!

Congratulations on completing the survey! Below you will find your persona report which gives more insights about where your organization might be needing support and guidance in developing knowledge, skills, and values in justice and equity work. The following persona is a suggestion for where your organization may be in their journey, and it might not fully capture the needs, motivations, and/or challenges your organization is experiencing.

    Teachable Turtles

Like turtles, your organization is moving with thoughtfulness and intention on your journey. Seeking wisdom and knowledge, as Teachable Turtles you care deeply about this work and understand change can’t be rushed. You may be feeling stuck by what you don’t know, uncertainty of where to go next, or a desire to do it right. Though moving carefully can be wisdom in action, you might consider where the desire for getting it right may be holding you back.

Want support with how to debrief the results for you and your team?

    Motivations

    • Your organization receives funding that has equity and justice-based outcomes.
    • As leaders, you care but you also may be stuck in what you don’t know!
    • You may hold this unawareness as fear of change and fear of doing the “wrong thing”.

    Pain Points

    • Staff and leaders in your organization don’t always represent the people in the communities that you are serving.
    • Leaders are often comfortably entrenched in their position of power.
    • Leaders may be unaware or uncomfortable with how to take responsibility for unlearning necessary to push your organization into focusing on justice and equity within your systems.

    Needs

    • Become aware of what you don’t see, such as your privilege and positionality.
    • Build further understanding that you are each implicated in the work. Practicing justice and equity work is demanding. It requires active participation from all people involved. This means not just assigning others to do the work for your organization.
    • Build equity commitments into your strategic plan and move it towards actioning it.

How you interact with Justice and Equity

Teachable Turtles value justice and equity initiatives and know that they are a priority in work but may not understand the nuance at a deeper level. You may view your role as creating space for equity-deserving groups to lead, but hold a mindset that the outcomes exclude you participating actively as well. You may not understand how to use your own power and privilege to affect change. You’re still curious about better understanding reciprocity and how to center ongoing relationship building in your work.

IONS is located in Mi’kma’ki, the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaw people. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship, which the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik people first signed with the British Crown in 1726. These Treaties did not involve the surrendering of rights to the lands and resources they had traditionally used and occupied. We are all Treaty People.

This land is also the birthplace of Black heritage and culture in what is now known as Canada following the forcible displacement of people of African descent. As an organization and as people, we are committed to carrying out the long overdue, vital reconciliation and anti-oppression work.
